Hawaiian Recipe for How to Make Soy and Ginger Shoyu Chicken
Shoyu chicken is a delicious traditional Hawaiian recipe. The word shoyu is Japanese for soy sauce which forms a primary constituent of the recipe.
Ingredients for Shoyu Chicken:
- 200 mililitres (1 standard cup) of soy sauce
- 100 millilitres of water
- 150 grams of brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon of ground ginger
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 3 tablespoons of Worcester sauce
- 1500 grams (3.3 lbs) of boneless chicken thighs
- 200 grams of green onions
Making shoyu chicken is really simple. In a pot pour your soy sauce, water and sugar. Crush the two cloves of garlic and drop these in. Add your ginger and Worcester sauce. Stir the mixture and bring it to the boil over a high heat. Then add your chicken thighs. The skin can be left on but they should be boneless. Reduce the heat to medium and cover your pan with a lid. Your shoyu chicken mixture should simmer for about an hour in total.
Whilst everything is simmering, chop your green onions into thin slices. These will be used to garnish your shoyu chicken.
Half way through the cooking, give everything a good stir and mix around to ensure the sauce is well distributed over all of the chicken pieces, and all of the chicken is being cooked. Give it all another stir after a total of about the 50 minutes of cooking. Once the hour has passed everything should be done, with the sauce having been nicely absorbed by the chicken. Give it another stir and serve the chicken and its sauce together.
Once your shoyu chicken is on the plate, scatter your chopped green onions over the chicken as a garnish.
Shoyu chicken is traditionally served with rice but you can alternatively serve with potatoes or fries (chips if you're from the UK). Add your favourite vegetables to the plate to complete your meal.
